Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Polish passport photo?
Polish passport photos must be 35mm × 45mm, the standard EU size. The face from chin to top of forehead should measure 32mm. This is the same size used across the Schengen zone.
Why can't I have a white background?
Polish passport and ID regulations specifically require a light gray background (approximately 5-10% gray). This helps with biometric scanning. White backgrounds are only accepted for visa applications.
Can I wear glasses in my Polish passport photo?
No. Since 2021, Poland no longer accepts passport or ID photos with glasses of any kind, including prescription glasses. You must remove all eyewear for the photo.
Where can Poles abroad get passport photos?
Polish citizens abroad can use VisaPicPro to create compliant photos at home, then print them at any photo lab. Many Polish consulates also have photo booths, or you can visit local pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens in the US.

Polish Passport Photo Guide — Województwo Office Requirements

Poland Follows EU Standards — With Strict Enforcement

Polish passport photos follow the standard EU/ICAO biometric format: 35×45mm with a light grey to white background and a face height of 32-36mm from chin to crown. So far, identical to Germany, France, or any other Schengen state. Where Poland differs is in how strictly the Urząd Wojewódzki (Voivodeship Office) staff enforce these rules. They measure. They check with overlays. And if something's off by even a millimeter, they send you to the photo studio next door.

The expression requirement is zero tolerance — not even a trace of a smile. Both eyes equally open, looking straight at the camera, teeth not visible, chin level. Poland also has specific guidance about ears: while not strictly required to be visible (unlike some Asian countries), having both ears showing is "recommended" in practice, and showing them avoids any potential pushback at the counter.

Where to Apply

  • Urząd Wojewódzki Mazowiecki (Warsaw) — Plac Bankowy 3/5, 00-950 Warszawa. Main office for the Masovian Voivodeship.
  • Urząd Wojewódzki Kraków — ul. Basztowa 22, 31-156 Kraków. Covers the Małopolska region.
  • Urząd Wojewódzki Gdańsk — ul. Okopowa 21/27, 80-810 Gdańsk
  • Urząd Wojewódzki Wrocław — pl. Powstańców Warszawy 1, 50-153 Wrocław
  • Polish Embassy Washington DC — 2640 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009
  • Polish Consulate Chicago — 1530 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60610 (large Polish diaspora)

Poland also allows applications at the Urząd Miasta (city office) for some municipalities that have passport points. Check obywatel.gov.pl for your nearest location.

Common Rejection Scenarios

  1. Face not precisely 32-36mm from chin to crown — Polish offices literally measure this. Being even 1mm outside the range triggers rejection. Use a calibrated tool or professional studio that understands the spec.
  2. Any hint of a smile — Upturned corners of the mouth, visible teeth through parted lips, dimples engaged — all rejected. The "poker face" standard is real.
  3. Shadow under the nose — A classic sign of harsh overhead lighting. Polish officials specifically check the nose shadow area. Front-facing or 45-degree lighting is best.
  4. Photo on matte paper — Polish offices generally require glossy (błyszczący) photo paper. Semi-matte or matte prints are sent back.
  5. Hair across forehead — Bangs covering the eyebrows or upper forehead are not accepted. Pin them back or sweep them to the side.

Pricing

A standard Polish passport costs PLN 140 (~$35 USD) for adults and is valid for 10 years. Reduced rates are available: PLN 70 for students, seniors, large families, and disabled individuals. Children under 13 get passports valid for 5 years. Emergency travel documents (paszport tymczasowy) cost PLN 30 and are issued within 24 hours for critical situations. Standard processing is up to 30 days, though most offices deliver in 2-3 weeks.
