UK passport photos must be 35mm wide x 45mm tall. The face from chin to crown should measure 29-34mm. Photos must be printed on white photo paper.
Can I wear glasses in my UK passport photo?
No. Since November 2016, HMPO no longer accepts photos with glasses. You must remove all eyewear, including prescription glasses and sunglasses.
What background colour is required?
The background must be plain light grey or cream. Pure white backgrounds are no longer accepted for UK passport photos. Our tool uses the correct light grey shade.

For children under 6, requirements are relaxed. Babies under 1 year can have their eyes closed. Children under 6 don't need a neutral expression. But for best results, try to capture open eyes and a forward-facing pose.

Complete Guide to UK Passport & Visa Photos

Understanding UK Passport Photo Standards

The United Kingdom's passport photo requirements are set by Her Majesty's Passport Office (HMPO) and are among the most specific in the world. UK passport photos must measure 35 x 45mm, show a close-up of your head and shoulders against a plain light grey or cream background - notably, the UK does not require a white background like many other countries. Your photo must be taken within the last month for a new application.

A key distinction from other countries is the UK's "plain expression" rule - you must look directly at the camera with your mouth closed and a neutral expression. Unlike the US, even a slight natural smile may be rejected by UK processing systems. The UK was one of the first countries to implement biometric facial recognition in passport processing, which is why the requirements are so precise.

Where to Apply for a UK Passport

Most UK passport applications are now handled online through GOV.UK. However, physical locations are available for urgent needs:

  • Online - Apply at gov.uk/apply-renew-passport (recommended, cheaper)
  • London Passport Office - 2 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DF (urgent & premium service)
  • Durham Passport Office - Freeman's Reach, Riverside Place, Durham DH1 1SL
  • Liverpool Passport Office - 101 Old Hall Street, Liverpool L3 9BD
  • Belfast Passport Office - High Street, Belfast BT1 2AN
  • Glasgow Passport Office - 96 Milton Street, Glasgow G4 0BT
  • Peterborough Passport Office - Aragon Court, Northminster Road, Peterborough PE1 1QG

Common UK Passport Photo Rejection Reasons

  1. Incorrect background color - The UK requires plain light grey or cream, NOT white. Many applicants use white backgrounds thinking all countries are the same.
  2. Smiling or mouth open - Even a natural smile can be rejected. The UK insists on a completely neutral expression with mouth closed.
  3. Red-eye effect - Flash photography causing red-eye is a common digital rejection reason. Use natural lighting when possible.
  4. Shadows on face - The UK's automated checking system flags any shadows on the face, neck, or background.
  5. Glasses reflections - While the UK still allows glasses (unlike the US), any glare or reflection on the lenses will cause rejection. Anti-reflective coated lenses or removing glasses is recommended.
  6. Photo too old - For new applications, the photo must be taken within the last month. For renewals, within the last 6 months.
  7. Hair across face - Your full face must be clearly visible from forehead to chin, with no hair covering any part of your face.

UK Digital Photo Upload Requirements

When applying online, you can upload a digital photo. The image should be at least 600 x 750 pixels, in JPEG format, and between 50KB and 10MB in size. The HMPO's automated system will check compliance and either accept or require a new photo. Our tool automatically generates photos meeting these digital specifications.

Costs & Processing Times (2026)

An adult online passport application costs 82.50, while postal applications cost 93. Child passports (under 16) cost 53.50 online. Standard processing takes up to 10 weeks. The 1-week Fast Track service costs 142, and the Online Premium (next working day at a passport office) costs 177. For emergencies involving travel within 48 hours, an urgent premium appointment can be booked by calling the Passport Adviceline (0300 222 0000).
