Create Photo NowThe Schengen visa photo requirements are standardized across all 27 Schengen member states through the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Document 9303 guidelines. This means one set of photo specifications applies whether you're applying for a visa to France, Germany, Italy, Spain, or any other Schengen country. The standard size is 35 x 45mm with a light-colored background (white, light grey, or light blue depending on the specific country's preference).
While the core specifications are the same, some member states have additional preferences or stricter enforcement. For example, Germany prefers a light grey background while most other Schengen states accept white. France uses the ANTS digital validation system, and the Netherlands has recently begun accepting only digital uploads through their online portal. Understanding these nuances can prevent delays in your visa application.
You must apply at the embassy or consulate of your main destination country. If visiting multiple Schengen countries for equal durations, apply at the embassy of your first point of entry. Most Schengen countries now outsource visa processing to VFS Global or TLS Contact centers:
A Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) costs 80 for adults and 40 for children aged 6-12. Children under 6 are exempt from fees. Processing typically takes 15 calendar days from the date of application, though it can extend to 45 days during peak season (April-September). Multiple-entry visas valid for 1-5 years may be issued to frequent travelers with a clean travel history.
