The standard size is 35 x 45mm with a light-colored background (white, light grey, or light blue depending on the specific country's preference).

While the core specifications are the same, some member states have additional preferences or stricter enforcement. For example, Germany prefers a light grey background while most other Schengen states accept white. France uses the ANTS digital validation system, and the Netherlands has recently begun accepting only digital uploads through their online portal. Where to Apply for a Schengen Visa

2. Photo older than 6 months - Visa officers can and do compare your photo to your appearance during the biometric appointment. Significant discrepancies lead to rejection.
3. Wrong background color - While most countries accept white, some specifically require light grey. Check your target country's specific requirements.
4. Head covering without valid reason - Only religious head coverings are accepted, and you may need to provide documentation. The face from chin to forehead must remain fully visible.
5. Photo quality insufficient - Phone-quality photos, especially selfies, are increasingly rejected as biometric scanning requires high-resolution images with precise focus.
6. Glasses with visible frames covering eyes - Many Schengen countries now recommend removing glasses entirely to avoid complications, even though they're technically permitted.

Processing typically takes 15 calendar days from the date of application, though it can extend to 45 days during peak season (April-September).
