Ghana's ePassport Brought Stricter Photo Checks

Ghana's transition to the biometric ePassport tightened up what used to be a relatively relaxed photo process. The old system accepted most reasonable photos; the new biometric scanners at the Passport Application Office are far pickier. They're looking for a 35 x 45mm image, white background, and your face has to be perfectly centered with a neutral expression. What catches a lot of Ghanaians off guard is the white background requirement many photo studios across the country still default to blue backdrops, which were fine before but are now rejected.

Application Points Across Ghana and Abroad

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) manages passport issuance through several channels:

All applications start through the online portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh. You fill in the form, upload your photo, and then attend a biometric enrollment session.

Photo Problems Ghanaians Run Into

1. Blue background instead of white The most common rejection. Many established studios haven't updated their backdrops since the ePassport rollout. Specifically request "white background for ePassport."
2. Photo too zoomed out The face should dominate the frame. Full shoulder shots with too much empty space above the head don't meet the biometric scanning requirements.
3. Shadows under the chin Poor studio lighting creates a dark patch below the jaw that the scanner reads as a boundary error. Look for studios with overhead and front-facing lights.
4. Smiling with teeth showing Ghanaians are famously warm and expressive, but the passport office needs a closed-mouth, relaxed expression.
5. Wearing kente or bright-patterned clothing While culturally significant, high-contrast patterns can cause visual noise near the neckline. Plain, dark-colored tops work best.

Fees and Processing

A 32-page Ghanaian passport costs GHS 100 with standard processing of 10-15 working days. The 48-page version is GHS 150. Express processing (available in Accra only) cuts the wait to about 5 days for an additional GHS 100. For Ghanaians abroad, the cost through high commissions and embassies is approximately $100-150 USD, and processing can take 3-6 weeks.
