Create Photo →Ghana's transition to the biometric ePassport tightened up what used to be a relatively relaxed photo process. The old system accepted most reasonable photos; the new biometric scanners at the Passport Application Office are far pickier. They're looking for a 35×45mm image, white background, and your face has to be perfectly centered with a neutral expression. What catches a lot of Ghanaians off guard is the white background requirement — many photo studios across the country still default to blue backdrops, which were fine before but are now rejected.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) manages passport issuance through several channels:
All applications start through the online portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh. You fill in the form, upload your photo, and then attend a biometric enrollment session.
A 32-page Ghanaian passport costs GHS 100 with standard processing of 10-15 working days. The 48-page version is GHS 150. Express processing (available in Accra only) cuts the wait to about 5 days for an additional GHS 100. For Ghanaians abroad, the cost through high commissions and embassies is approximately $100-150 USD, and processing can take 3-6 weeks.
