Create Photo Now βSouth Africa's Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has been rolling out modernized passport and ID systems in phases. The Smart ID card program established digital infrastructure that now also applies to passport processing. For passports, a key development is that DHA offices now capture your photo during the appointment itself β meaning they control the lighting, background, and framing. However, you should still understand the specs because some online pre-application forms and overseas missions require a photo upload.
The standard is 35Γ45mm on a white background. South Africa requires a neutral expression β not stern, not smiling, just natural and relaxed. Both ears should preferably be visible, though this isn't as strictly enforced as in some Asian countries. Hair should be pulled back from the face, and accessories like sunglasses, tinted lenses, or large earrings need to be removed.
DHA offices across all nine provinces accept applications. Wait times vary significantly β Gauteng offices tend to be busiest. Booking through the DHA e-booking system is strongly recommended.
A South African passport costs ZAR 400 (~$22 USD) β remarkably affordable by global standards. Standard processing takes 5-13 working days domestically. There's no official "express" service, but applications at the Pretoria head office tend to process faster. For South Africans abroad, consular applications cost approximately $50-130 USD depending on the mission, with processing times of 6-12 weeks.
