What’s Allowed & What Gets Rejected

Your hair can be down, up, braided, or styled — as long as your face is fully visible. Here are the exact hair rules for US, UK, Canada, India, and Schengen passport photos.

Hair is one of the most common reasons passport photos are rejected. Not because of hairstyle — you can wear your hair in virtually any style — but because hair obscures the face. If your hair covers your eyes, eyebrows, or the outline of your face, your photo will be rejected. Here is a clear breakdown of what is and is not allowed.

The One Universal Rule

Your entire face must be clearly visible

From the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead (including both eyebrows), and from ear to ear — nothing should be obstructed. This is the core rule that applies in every country.

Beyond this rule, most countries do not care about your hairstyle. You can have long hair, short hair, curly hair, braids, dreadlocks, an afro, a mohawk, or a completely shaved head. What matters is face visibility, not fashion.

Can Your Hair Be Down?

Yes. You can wear your hair down in a passport photo. There is no requirement to tie it up, pin it back, or tuck it behind your ears (in most countries).

However, if your hair is long enough to potentially fall across your face during the photo, take precautions:

  • Sweep hair behind your shoulders before the photo
  • Make sure no strands are falling across your forehead or cheek
  • Tuck hair behind your ears if it covers the sides of your face
  • Hair should not create shadows on your face
  • Hair should not extend beyond the frame of the photo (cropping issue)

Bangs and Fringes

Bangs are the trickiest hair situation for passport photos. Here is the breakdown:

Light, side-swept bangs

Generally accepted. If your bangs are above your eyebrow line and do not cast shadows, they are fine.

Straight bangs that touch the eyebrows

Risky. Some reviewers will accept them, others will not. It depends on how much of the eyebrow is hidden. Best to pin them back or sweep to the side.

Heavy bangs covering the eyebrows or forehead

Will be rejected. The forehead and both eyebrows must be visible. This is a biometric requirement for facial recognition systems.

Bangs covering one or both eyes

Automatic rejection in every country. Both eyes must be fully visible.

If you normally wear heavy bangs, the safest approach is to clip them back or pin them to the side for the photo. You can style them however you like in real life — the photo just needs your face visible.

Updos, Ponytails, Buns, and Braids

All of these are perfectly fine for passport photos:

  • Ponytail: Accepted. Low or high, both work.
  • Bun: Accepted. Even large buns are fine as long as they do not get cropped out of the frame.
  • Braids: Accepted. Single braid, double braids, French braid — all fine.
  • Dreadlocks: Accepted. Ensure they do not fall across the face.
  • Afro: Accepted. Ensure the entire hairstyle fits within the photo frame.
  • Buzz cut / shaved: Accepted. No issues.

The only potential issue with tall hairstyles (large buns, tall afros) is framing. The top of your hair might get cut off if the photographer frames too tightly. Make sure the entire head, including hair, fits within the photo.

Beards and Facial Hair

Beards, mustaches, goatees, and all facial hair are fully allowed in passport photos worldwide. You do not need to shave for a passport photo.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Consistency: Your passport photo should match your current appearance. If you normally have a full beard, keep it. If you normally are clean-shaven, stay clean-shaven. Drastic changes between the photo and your actual appearance can create issues at border control.
  • Very long beards: Fine, as long as the chin and jawline shape are visible.
  • Mustaches covering the mouth: Generally accepted, though some countries prefer the upper lip visible.

Hijab, Turban, and Religious Head Coverings

Religious and medical head coverings are allowed in passport photos around the world. The key requirements are:

  • The full face must be visible from chin to forehead
  • No shadows from the head covering should fall on the face
  • The head covering must be worn for religious or medical reasons (not fashion)
  • Fashion hats, beanies, caps, and headbands are not allowed

US: A signed statement may be required explaining the religious/medical reason for the head covering.

UK: No written statement required, but the reason must be genuine.

India: Sikh turbans are specifically permitted. No signed statement needed.
