Frequently Asked Questions

What background color should I use for a French passport photo?

French passports traditionally require a light gray (gris clair) or light blue background. However, if you're applying for a Schengen visa through France, a plain white background is also acceptable. Our tool lets you choose between these options.

Where can I take a passport photo in France (photomaton)?

You can use our free online tool from home, or in France, look for "photomaton" booths at metro stations, supermarkets, and public buildings. Many photography shops (photographe) also offer passport photo services. Our online tool is the most convenient option.

Can I use the same photo for French visa and other Schengen countries?

Yes, if you use a white background. All Schengen countries (Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.) accept 35×45mm photos with white backgrounds. A photo made for a French Schengen visa will work for any other Schengen country's visa application.

How many photos do I need for a French visa application?

Most French visa applications require 2 recent identical photos. For titre de séjour (residence permit) applications at the préfecture, you may need up to 3 photos. We recommend printing 4 copies to be safe. Our tool creates a print sheet with multiple photos.

Complete Guide to French Passport & Visa Photos

Understanding French Passport Photo Standards

French passport photo requirements are regulated by the Ministry of the Interior and follow the ICAO biometric standards applied across the Schengen zone. Photos must be 35×45mm with a plain light blue, light grey, or white background. France is one of the few countries that introduced the ANTS eph@to service (Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés), which allows citizens to upload digital photos with a unique code that links to their passport application.

The face must measure 32-36mm from chin to top of head. Expression must be neutral with mouth closed — the French system does not accept any smile. Both ears should be visible, though this is not absolute if hairstyle naturally covers them. France has recently increased scrutiny on photo compliance due to biometric passport requirements, and automated photo checks are now standard at most préfectures.

Where to Apply for a French Passport

  • Mairies (Town Halls) — Any equipped mairie in France processes passport applications. Not all communes have biometric capture equipment.
  • Préfectures — Regional government offices in each department capital
  • Sous-Préfectures — Sub-regional offices in larger departments
  • ANTS Online Pre-Applicationpasseport.ants.gouv.fr (recommended for faster processing)
  • French Embassy Washington — 4101 Reservoir Road NW, Washington DC 20007
  • French Consulate London — 21 Cromwell Road, London SW7 2EN

Common Rejection Reasons for French Photos

  1. Face height incorrect — The 32-36mm chin-to-crown measurement is strictly enforced by the ANTS digital validation system.
  2. Photo not recent enough — Photos must be taken within the last 6 months and must resemble your current appearance.
  3. Red-eye or flash reflections — French standards explicitly prohibit red-eye effect and any visible flash reflection.
  4. Headband or hair accessories — Only religious head coverings are permitted. Decorative headbands, bows, or clips must be removed.
  5. Photo from automated booth (photomaton) with wrong settings — While photomaton booths are widely used in France, the settings must be specifically set to passport mode.

Costs & Processing (2026)

A French passport costs €86 for adults (valid 10 years), €42 for minors aged 15-17, and €17 for children under 15. Processing takes 2-3 weeks typically but can extend to 6 weeks during peak travel season (June-August). Emergency passports (passeport d'urgence) are valid for 1 year and cost €30 — available for proven urgent travel within 5 days.
