Mexico's Same-Day Passport — If Your Photo Is Right

Mexico has one of the fastest passport issuance systems in the world. Walk into a Delegación de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) with your documents and a compliant photo, and you can walk out with your passport the same day. The entire process — from biometrics to printing — can happen in a single visit. But that speed only works if your photo passes the first screening. A rejected photo means rebooking a cita (appointment), which can push you back days or weeks depending on demand.

SRE requires 35×45mm photos with a white background. The photo must be "reciente" — recent, meaning taken within the last 30 days. Mexico has also banned glasses in passport photos since 2018. No tinted lenses, no prescription frames, no sunglasses pushed up on your head. And unlike some Latin American countries that are relaxed about expression, Mexico requires a fully neutral face — boca cerrada (mouth closed), no teeth showing.

SRE Offices Across Mexico

  • Delegación Tlatelolco — Plaza Juárez 20, Col. Centro, CDMX. The main national headquarters.
  • Delegación Polanco — Calle Homero 213, Polanco, CDMX. Generally shorter wait times than Tlatelolco.
  • Delegación Monterrey — Av. Constitución Oriente 150, Centro, Monterrey
  • Delegación Guadalajara — Calle Alcalde 500, Zona Centro, Guadalajara
  • Consulado de México en Los Angeles — 2401 W 6th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90057
  • Consulado de México en Chicago — 204 South Ashland Avenue, Chicago, IL 60607

There are over 40 delegaciones in Mexico and nearly 50 consulates in the United States alone — the largest consular network of any country in the US. Appointments are booked at citas.sre.gob.mx.

Photo Problems That Delay Your Cita

  1. Glasses worn in the photo — The 2018 ban is strict. Even clear frames with no lenses will be rejected. Remove everything from your face.
  2. Photo older than 30 days — Mexico's "reciente" window is one of the shortest in the world. That photo you took 2 months ago for a US visa? Too old for SRE.
  3. Beauty filters applied — SRE officers cross-reference your submitted photo against the biometric capture at the office. Filtered photos create a visible mismatch.
  4. Background not uniformly white — Walls, sheets, or backdrops with any texture, shadow, or tint are rejected. The white must be clean and consistent.
  5. Photo too small or cropped wrong — Face should take up 70-80% of the frame. Passport-booth photos sometimes crop too tightly around the head.

Cost Tiers

Mexico offers four passport validity options, each at a different price: 1-year emergency (MXN $1,345), 3-year (MXN $1,810), 6-year (MXN $2,680), and 10-year (MXN $3,580). The 10-year option is the best value for frequent travelers. All domestic processing is typically same-day. Consular applications abroad cost approximately $49-157 USD depending on validity and take 4-6 weeks.
