Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a New Zealand passport photo?

New Zealand passport photos must be exactly 35mm wide by 45mm high (413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI). Your head should measure between 32-36mm from chin to crown, taking up about 70-80% of the photo height.

What background colour is required?

The Department of Internal Affairs accepts either a plain white or light grey background. The background must be uniform with no patterns, shadows, or objects visible.

Can I wear glasses in my NZ passport photo?

Yes, you can wear prescription glasses in your New Zealand passport photo, but there must be no glare or reflections on the lenses. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not permitted. If possible, removing glasses produces the best results.

How long is a NZ passport valid?

New Zealand adult passports are valid for 5 years (10 years optional for adults 16+). Child passports (under 16) are valid for 5 years. You can apply online through the DIA website or at participating PostShops.

How much does a New Zealand passport cost?

As of 2026, a standard 5-year adult passport costs NZ$206 (online) or NZ$241 (at PostShop). A 10-year passport costs NZ$311 online. Child passports are NZ$113 (online). Urgent processing is available for an additional fee.

Can I take my own passport photo?

Yes! You can take your own photo using a smartphone or digital camera and use VisaPicPro to resize and format it to meet DIA requirements. Just ensure good lighting, a plain background, and follow all photo guidelines.

New Zealand Passport Photos — Kiwi Simplicity Done Right

One of the Smoothest Passport Systems on Earth

New Zealand's Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has built a passport application system that's genuinely pleasant to use. The online application at passports.govt.nz lets you upload a digital photo that's instantly validated against biometric standards. If something's wrong, you know immediately — no waiting weeks for a rejection letter. Many Kiwis complete their entire passport renewal without leaving the couch, and the new document arrives within a week.

Photo specs: 35×45mm for printed submissions, or 900×1200 pixels (minimum) for digital uploads. White or off-white background. Neutral expression — and New Zealand is very strict about this. No smile, no raised eyebrows, mouth fully closed. The DIA's automated checker is particularly sensitive to mouth position; even slightly parted lips trigger a rejection. Glasses are allowed but strongly discouraged by the DIA's own guidance.

How to Apply

  • Online (recommended)passports.govt.nz with RealMe identity verification. Fastest option.
  • PostShop counter service — NZ Post offices offer identity verification and photo checking for in-person applications.
  • Passport Office Auckland — 109 Customs Street West. Walk-in urgent service available.
  • Passport Office Wellington — 47 Boulcott Street. The head office.
  • NZ High Commission London — New Zealand House, 80 Haymarket, London SW1Y 4TQ
  • NZ Embassy Washington DC — 37 Observatory Circle NW, Washington, DC 20008

What the Checker Flags

  1. Lips not fully closed — The DIA's system is notoriously strict about mouth position. Even breathing through a slightly open mouth can register as non-neutral. Consciously press your lips together gently.
  2. Shadows anywhere in the frame — The automated validator checks for shadows on both the face and the background. Flat, even lighting from the front is essential.
  3. Resolution too low — For online submissions, anything below 900×1200 pixels is rejected. Phone photos taken in good light usually meet this, but zoom-cropping can drop below the threshold.
  4. Glasses creating reflections — While glasses aren't banned, any visible reflection on the lenses — especially from screens or windows — triggers a rejection. Consider removing them entirely.
  5. Head not centered or tilted — The DIA's biometric system measures facial symmetry. Your face needs to be dead center in the frame with no rotation in any direction.

Cost

An adult NZ passport (10-year validity) costs NZ$191 for domestic applications and NZ$331 for overseas applications. Child passports (5-year validity) are NZ$113 domestically. Standard processing takes about 10 working days. Urgent processing (3 working days) costs NZ$363, and there's a super-urgent option for NZ$561 that can be done in under 24 hours at the Auckland or Wellington offices. NZ passports provide visa-free access to over 185 countries.
