Colombia Passport Photo Guide — Cancillería Requirements Explained

The Colombian System Is Surprisingly Fast

If you've ever dealt with passport bureaucracy in other Latin American countries, Colombia might pleasantly surprise you. The Cancillería (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has streamlined the process to the point where you can sometimes walk out with a passport the same day you apply. The catch? Your photo has to be perfect, because there's no "we'll fix it later" step — the Cancillería scans it right there at the counter.

Colombian passports require a 3×4cm (30×40mm) photo, which is smaller than the international standard of 35×45mm. The background must be white, and the expression needs to be completely neutral — no teeth showing, no raised eyebrows, nothing. The Cancillería specifically warns against "expresiones forzadas" (forced expressions) on their website.

Where Colombians Apply

The process starts online at cancilleria.gov.co, where you schedule a cita (appointment). Then you show up in person at:

  • Bogotá Sede Principal — Calle 10 No. 5-51, La Candelaria. The main national office.
  • Medellín — Centro Comercial Monterrey, Cra 48 No. 10-45
  • Cali — Calle 5 No. 5-60, Centro
  • Barranquilla — Gobernación del Atlántico office
  • Consulado de Colombia en Nueva York — 10 East 46th Street, New York, NY 10017
  • Consulado en Miami — 280 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables, FL 33134

Common Photo Problems at Cancillería Offices

  1. Wrong dimensions — Many photo studios give you standard 35×45mm photos. But Colombia uses 30×40mm. Be explicit about the size when ordering.
  2. Teeth visible — Even a slight parting of the lips where teeth show through will get flagged. Cancillería officers are trained to look for this.
  3. Wearing white clothing on white background — Your silhouette disappears. Wear something dark or colored so your outline is distinct against the backdrop.
  4. Digital retouching — Colombia is cracking down on filtered or Photoshopped images. The biometric scanners compare your submitted photo against the one captured at the office — discrepancies raise red flags.
  5. Photo older than 6 months — The officer may ask when the photo was taken if your current appearance doesn't match. Dyed hair, new beard, significant weight change — all grounds for rejection.

Pricing and Speed

A Colombian passport costs around COP $178,000 (roughly $45 USD) domestically. The beauty of the system is the speed — most people receive their passport within 1-3 working days after their appointment. Overseas applications through consulates cost about $80-120 USD and take 2-4 weeks. There's no formal "express" track; the standard processing is already fast by global standards.
