Frequently Asked Questions

Which format should I use for passport photos?
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely accepted format for passport photos. Most government websites, visa applications, and photo printing services require JPG. Use high quality (90%+) for best results. PNG is also accepted by some services, but JPG is safer.
Does converting formats reduce image quality?
It depends on the formats:
  • Lossless: PNG → PNG, BMP → PNG keeps full quality
  • Lossy: Converting to JPG/WebP with high quality (85%+) results in minimal, usually unnoticeable loss
  • Multiple conversions: Converting JPG → PNG → JPG accumulates quality loss. Avoid this!
What is the difference between lossy and lossless?
Lossless compression (PNG, BMP) preserves every pixel perfectly — no quality loss, but larger files.

Lossy compression (JPG, WebP) discards some data to make smaller files. At high quality settings (85%+), the difference is usually invisible to the human eye but saves significant file size.
Why can't I convert HEIC files?
HEIC is Apple's proprietary format and browser support is limited. Our tool can convert HEIC files in browsers that support it (Safari, newer Chrome). If it doesn't work in your browser, try using Safari on a Mac, or use a dedicated HEIC converter.
