Absher Digitized Everything Including Photo Validation
Saudi Arabia's Absher platform has transformed passport services into a largely digital experience. Photo submission, application tracking, appointment booking it all happens through absher.sa or the Absher app. The platform's photo validation is automated, which means your uploaded image either passes the technical checks immediately or gets rejected with an error code. Understanding what the system expects saves you from repeated upload attempts.
The rules: 35 x 45mm, white background, neutral expression. Here's the culturally significant part men must remove the ghutrah (white headscarf) and shemagh (red-and-white headscarf) for the photo. This is a firm regulation from the General Directorate of Passports, regardless of how universally it's worn in daily Saudi life. For women, the 2019 reforms were significant: Saudi women can now obtain passports independently (previously required male guardian approval), and hijab remains optional in the photo.

Most services are now initiated through Absher, with Jawazat offices reserved for biometric capture and complex cases. Some routine renewals are entirely online.
Photo Issues That Trigger Absher Rejection
- Ghutrah/shemagh not removed The system specifically checks for head coverings on male applicants. Not removing the headscarf is the #1 rejection.
- Photo resolution too low for Absher upload The platform has minimum resolution and DPI requirements. Screenshots or over-compressed images from messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) almost always fail.
- Eyes not fully visible For women wearing hijab, if the fabric casts any shadow near the eyes or the eyebrows aren't fully visible, the upload will be rejected.
- Background not uniformly white Even a slight gradient or warm tint triggers the automated background check. Professional studios with calibrated lighting work best.
- File format or size mismatch Absher expects JPEG within specific file size limits. PNG, HEIC (iPhone default), or oversized files are auto-rejected without a clear error message.
Cost and Speed
A 10-year Saudi passport costs SAR 300 (~$80 USD). Processing is remarkably fast typically 3-5 working days for standard applications, essentially same-day for renewals through Absher in some cases. The Saudi passport has improved dramatically in global rankings, now offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 80 countries. Emergency travel documents are available through Jawazat offices within 24 hours.
