The photo requirements follow standard ICAO biometric specs: 35×45mm, white background, face height 32-36mm. Neutral expression, mouth closed, no glasses (recommended). What makes Portugal noteworthy is that the IRN offices often capture the photo during the appointment, similar to the Netherlands. Photo Issues That Come Up

1. Photo retouched or filtered — IRN specifically checks for digital manipulation. Portugal's system compares the submitted photo against the one captured during biometric enrollment. Discrepancies — smoother skin, altered eye size, face shape changes — get flagged.
2. Background not pure white — Even very light cream or grey tones can fail the IRN's automated check. Use a bright, clean white backdrop.
3. Face height outside the 32-36mm window — IRN staff verify this measurement. Being too close or too far from the camera produces non-compliant face proportions.
4. Red-eye from flash photography — Flash reflections in the eyes are caught by the biometric scanner. Natural light or diffused studio flash avoids this problem.
5. Head not straight — Any tilt — forward, backward, or to the side — shows up in the biometric measurement and causes rejection.
