Malaysia Passport Photo Requirements (2025-2026)

Planning a trip to Malaysia, or are you a Malaysian citizen renewing your passport? Here's something important: Malaysia uses a unique photo size that's different from most other countries. While many countries use 35×45mm, Malaysia requires 35×50mm – that's 5mm taller. Get this wrong, and your application will be rejected.

Another key difference is the background color. Malaysia requires a light blue (sky blue) background, not white. Our tool is specifically configured to handle these Malaysian requirements, so you don't have to worry about getting rejected.

Official JPN Photo Specifications

Photo Dimensions 35mm × 50mm (width × height)
Digital Size 413 × 591 pixels (at 300 DPI)
Face Height 32mm to 36mm (chin to crown)
Background Light blue / Sky blue (warna biru muda)
Expression Neutral, mouth closed
Head Covering Religious headwear allowed (face must be visible)
Photo Age Taken within last 6 months

Important: Blue Background Required

Unlike most countries, Malaysia specifically requires a light blue background for passports and MyKad. White backgrounds will be rejected. Our tool automatically applies the correct shade of blue used by JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Malaysia use a different photo size?

Malaysia has historically used the 35×50mm format, which predates the current international standards. While many countries have adopted 35×45mm, Malaysia maintains its traditional format. This is why using a Malaysia-specific photo tool like ours is important.

Can I wear a hijab in my Malaysian passport photo?

Yes, Muslim women can wear a tudung (hijab) in Malaysian passport and MyKad photos. The headscarf should be worn in a way that shows the full face clearly from forehead to chin. No face shadows should be created by the headscarf.

Where can I take a passport photo in Malaysia?

You can use our free online tool from home, or visit any UTC (Urban Transformation Centre), JPN office, or photo shops in malls. Many print shops like Max Print or Print Copy Scan offer passport photo services. Our online tool is the most convenient option with guaranteed JPN compliance.

Can I use a Malaysian passport photo for Singapore visa?

No, Malaysian photos (35×50mm with blue background) cannot be used for Singapore applications, which require 35×45mm with white background. Each country has specific requirements. Use our tool to create the correct format for each country.

Malaysia Passport Photo Requirements — The Size Catches Everyone Off Guard

Malaysia's Unique 35×50mm Format

Malaysian passport photos are 35×50mm — 5mm taller than what most of the world uses. That might sound minor, but it means any "standard passport photo" service abroad will give you the wrong size. The extra height changes how your face sits in the frame, so it's not just a matter of adding blank space at the top. Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia (JIM) expects the face to fill a specific proportion of that taller frame.

The background requirement also has a twist: JIM accepts both white and light blue backgrounds, and which one you need can depend on the type of document. For the standard passport, white is most commonly accepted. Light blue is more associated with the MyKad (national identity card). When in doubt, go with white — it's safe for all Malaysian documents.

Where Malaysians Apply

  • JIM Headquarters, Putrajaya — Persiaran Perdana, Precinct 2, 62550. The main national immigration office.
  • JIM Kuala Lumpur — Kompleks Imigresen Jalan Duta. Handles the biggest volume of applications.
  • JIM Johor Bahru — Jalan Air Molek. Busy due to proximity to Singapore.
  • JIM Penang — Lebuh Pantai, George Town. Main north Malaysia processing center.
  • JIM Kota Kinabalu — Karamunsing Complex, Sabah. Serves East Malaysia.
  • Malaysian Embassy Washington DC — 3516 International Court NW, Washington, DC 20008

Malaysia also offers the MyOnline Passport portal for renewals — one of the more functional online systems in Southeast Asia. For new passports, in-person visits are still required for biometric enrollment.

Photo Issues That Cause Delays

  1. Standard 35×45mm photos instead of 35×50mm — The most typical rejection when photos are taken overseas. Our tool outputs the correct Malaysian dimensions.
  2. Tudung (hijab) not properly arranged — The full oval of the face must be visible. The tudung should frame the face neatly without drooping over the cheeks or jawline. JIM officers are experienced in checking this.
  3. Smile or any teeth showing — JIM is very particular about neutral expression. "Senyum" (smile) is not allowed even if it's subtle.
  4. Photo too dark — Skin tones should look natural and bright. Underexposed photos where facial features lack definition won't pass.
  5. Glasses with thick frames — Frames that partially cover the eyebrows or top of the cheeks are flagged. Thin-framed or frameless glasses are acceptable if there's no lens glare.

Fees and Timing

A regular Malaysian passport costs RM200 (~$43 USD) for adults and is valid for 5 years. Express service at RM400 cutting processing time from 5 working days down to 1-2 days. For those under 12, the passport costs RM100. Malaysian citizens abroad pay higher embassy fees, typically RM300-400 with processing times of 4-6 weeks.
