Thailand Passport Photo Guide — Chaengwattana Road and Beyond

Thailand's Photo Culture vs. Passport Rules

Thailand is known as the "Land of Smiles," and Thai people tend to smile naturally in photographs. But at the Department of Consular Affairs (กรมการกงสุล), smiling is exactly what you can't do. It's a cultural disconnect that the passport office deals with every day — the officer will politely ask you to relax your face, and many applicants struggle to suppress their instinctive smile. The tip: don't think "don't smile" (that makes it worse). Instead, let your face go completely slack, like you're watching the news.

Technical specs: 35×45mm, white background, neutral expression, mouth closed. Thailand has also moved toward discouraging glasses in passport photos — while not formally banned, the Consular Affairs office recommends removing them. The photo should be recent (within 6 months), color, full-face, and printed on glossy paper if submitting physical copies.

Processing Locations

  • Department of Consular Affairs, Bangkok — 123 Chaengwattana Road, Laksi, Bangkok 10210. The main headquarters — come early, it gets crowded after 10am.
  • MFA Branch at Suvarnabhumi Airport — Landside, basement level. For urgent travel only.
  • Provincial Passport Offices — Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Songkhla (Hat Yai), Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani, and more.
  • Royal Thai Embassy Washington DC — 1024 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20007
  • Royal Thai Consulate New York — 351 East 52nd Street, New York, NY 10022
  • Royal Thai Embassy London — 29-30 Queen's Gate, London SW7 5JB

What Gets Rejected

  1. Smiling — The number one rejection reason, specifically because it contradicts Thai cultural instinct. Officers will ask you to retake the photo at the office if needed, but this adds wait time.
  2. Photo background not white — Some Thai photo studios offer color backgrounds for portraits. For passports, white only. Say "พื้นหลังสีขาว สำหรับพาสปอร์ต" (white background for passport).
  3. Glasses worn — While technically allowed, the Chaengwattana office increasingly asks applicants to remove glasses. Better to leave them off from the start.
  4. Photo taken with beauty mode on — Thai smartphone users frequently have beautification enabled by default. The passport office compares the submitted photo to the person at the counter.
  5. White clothing blending with background — A very common mistake as many Thai workers have white uniform shirts. Wear a colored top for your passport photo.

Costs and Speed

A regular Thai passport (5-year validity) costs THB 1,000 (~$28 USD). Same-day express service is available at the Chaengwattana headquarters for THB 2,000 (~$56 USD) — one of few countries offering genuine same-day processing at a reasonable premium. Provincial offices take about 15 working days for standard processing. For Thais abroad, embassy processing costs approximately $40-60 USD and takes 4-6 weeks.
