Common Photo Mistakes to Avoid
Wrong Photo Size
Kenya uses a 2×2 inch (51×51mm) square format — the same as the US. Many applicants mistakenly submit 35×45mm photos used in Europe, which are immediately rejected.
Non-White Background
Only a plain white background is accepted. Huduma Centre counters have scanners that detect colored or off-white backgrounds and your application will be returned.
Wearing Glasses
Glasses are not allowed in Kenya e-Passport photos. The biometric system at JKIA and other border points needs a clear view of your eye area for facial recognition matching.
Smiling or Tilted Head
Keep a neutral expression with your head straight and level. Your eyes should look directly at the camera. Even a slight tilt can fail the biometric alignment check.
Shadows on Face
Harsh overhead lighting from fluorescent tubes creates nose and chin shadows. Use front-facing light from a window or stand between two lamps for even illumination.
Low Resolution Photo
The eCitizen portal requires clear, high-resolution uploads. Photos taken from far away or zoomed-in screenshots will fail the quality check during online application.
