BRP Photo FAQ

Is a BRP the same as a UK visa?
No, they're different:
  • Visa (vignette): A sticker in your passport that lets you enter the UK. Valid for 30-90 days.
  • BRP: A card you collect after arriving in the UK. Shows your full immigration status and is valid for the duration of your leave.
You need both: the visa to enter, and the BRP as ongoing proof of status.
What if I lose my BRP card?
  • Report it immediately on GOV.UK
  • Apply for a replacement BRP (fee applies)
  • If outside UK, apply for a BRP Replacement Visa to re-enter
  • Keep copies of your BRP in a safe place
Can I use my BRP as ID in the UK?
Yes, your BRP can be used as:
  • Proof of identity for employers
  • Proof of right to work
  • Proof of right to rent
  • Accessing NHS services
  • Opening bank accounts
However, you'll still need your passport for international travel.
Are BRPs being phased out?
Yes, the UK is transitioning to eVisas. From 2025, BRP cards will be phased out and replaced with digital immigration status that can be viewed and shared online. Your photo will still need to meet the same requirements for the digital system.
