Understanding Philippine Passport Photo
Requirements
Philippine passport photo specifications are established by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The standard size is 35 x 45mm with a white background. The Philippines has recently modernized its
passport system with the introduction of ePassports, which use biometric data including facial
recognition. As a result, photo requirements have become stricter your face must measure 25-35mm
from chin to crown, and the image must be high-resolution with sharp focus.
One important note for Filipino applicants: the DFA now takes photos at the processing site itself
during most in-person applications, rather than requiring applicants to bring printed photos.
However, you still need compliant photos for visa applications to other countries, overseas passport
renewal by mail, and for the DFA online appointment system's photo upload feature. Understanding the
specifications remains essential.

Common Rejection Reasons for Philippine Passport
Photos
- Smile too wide The DFA now requires a neutral expression. Even a slight smile
may be flagged by the biometric capture system.
- Wearing eyeglasses The DFA system now requires photos without any eyeglasses,
including prescription glasses.
- White clothing on white background Since the background is white, wearing a
white shirt or blouse makes the outline invisible. Wear colored clothing.
- Earrings too large or dangling Oversized earrings that extend beyond the face
outline or create shadows are not permitted.
- Photo resolution too low Phone selfies may not meet the minimum resolution
requirements. Use a proper camera or our tool to ensure quality.
Costs & Processing (2026)
A regular Philippine ePassport costs 950 (approximately $17 USD) for regular processing (15 working
days) and 1,200 for expedited processing (7 working days). Express processing (3-4 working days)
costs 1,500. For overseas Filipinos, the cost is $60 USD for regular processing and $80 USD for
expedited processing at Philippine embassies and consulates.
