Australian Passport Photo FAQ

Can I smile in my Australian passport photo?
No, you must have a neutral expression with your mouth closed. Smiling or showing teeth is not permitted. Your face should be relaxed and natural.
Can I wear a headscarf or religious covering?
Yes, religious head coverings are allowed if worn for genuine religious reasons:
  • Your full face must be visible from chin to forehead
  • Both edges of the face must be clearly visible
  • No shadows should fall on your face from the head covering
What about baby passport photos in Australia?
For babies and young children:
  • Eyes should be open (as much as possible for newborns)
  • Mouth should be closed
  • Lay baby on a plain white sheet for the background
  • No toys, dummies, or hands visible
  • Parent's hands must not be in the photo
How long is an Australian passport photo valid?
