What is the Thailand DTV Visa?

Launched in June 2024, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is Thailand's answer to the digital nomad movement. It's a game-changer: 5 years validity, 180 days per stay (extendable to 360!), and relatively easy requirements. Chiang Mai has been the unofficial digital nomad capital for years - now it's official!

The visa covers remote workers, freelancers, and anyone doing "workcation" or attending events like Muay Thai training, cooking courses, or wellness retreats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DTV different from the old Thailand Elite visa?
Yes! Thailand Elite is a luxury membership starting at $16,000+ for 5 years. The DTV is only ~$280 and specifically designed for remote workers. DTV is way more accessible for most digital nomads!
Can I work for Thai companies on DTV?
No, the DTV is specifically for remote work with foreign clients/employers. You cannot take local Thai employment. If you want to work for Thai companies, you'll need a regular work permit and business visa.
How do I extend beyond 180 days?
Visit a Thai Immigration office before your 180 days expire. Pay 1,900 THB (~$55) and you can extend for another 180 days. After that, you'll need to leave Thailand and re-enter to reset the counter.
What counts as proof of remote work?
Employment contract showing remote work, freelance contracts with foreign clients, business registration, or proof of enrollment in a workcation program (Muay Thai, yoga teacher training, cooking school, etc.). Some embassies are flexible!
